This book chronicles one year in Jim's life, sandwiched between his completing coursework and performing his doctoral research in Medical Biophysics. The working subtitle was "A Bad Example" for he learned that year that for him there was a better work paradigm. The importance of this work is the illumination it provides on his character.

I later would describe my professional life as a jack of all trades. Most holders of a doctorate can be described as deep and narrow; they have very deep expertise in a narrow field. I, on the other hand, know a little about a lot, but nothing to any significant depth. One can see the seeds of that characteristic in my choice of graduate program and research topic.
